The Shell Structure of the Earth

First we will have a closer look at the inside of earth. It is not homogeneously built, but consists of several layers; the core (inner and outer), the mantle and the relatively thin crust as the picture on the right shows.

The top part of the mantle is solid and forms together with the crust the lithosphere, which is up to 100 kilometers thick.
